This course will focus on traditional Islamic patterns. Participants will create geometric and biomorphic designs using traditional tools and methods. They will also learn about the different types of patterns and their origins.
This workshop is an introduction to relief printing using lino. Using geometric patterns and designs as inspiration, the surface of the lino is cut and carved into to create indents, texture and other types of mark making using specific carving tools.
Participants will recognise differences in carpets from around the world. They will study carpet patterns and colours to create a sketch for a mini-carpet they will produce using basic carpet-making techniques.
Inspired by Emirati women’s historical tradition of gifting their loved ones a ‘starter kit’ for Ramadan, participants will create their own Ramadan gift hampers using a wide range of spices, herbs, oils and fabrics from Souq Saqr in Sharjah Art Foundation neighbourhood.
